Which of the Seven Deadly Sins am I? I am Lust for the nights spent together passionately entwined exploring eachother's bodies with fingertips and mouths, tongues and sweaty palms. It was there from that first evening I met her. The ephemeral glimpse of an image is still beautifully burned into my cornea: staring down at me from her perch in the stairwell with her half-smile and those brights eyes which locked with mine own of longing momentarily as I departed. My heart must have skipped a beat. The beach. Doc's. Massages. Jim Jarmusch. I am Covetousness because the desire I have for the affection which remains only in the dim-lit evening eddies of when we are alone and which ventures not out further than my dormitory egress. I am Pride because I want to stand and shout that she is mine, but I know not whether I am hers. I am Wrath for the dance of which was not asked of me, but it was I who had to interject. I am Envy. There should be an eighth one: either stupidity or ignorance. |

Today from 10:30 to 5:15 the power was out for the entire base. I think this was because of all the rain which Monterey is not used to. Usually when i t rains in Monterey, most places would call it drizzle, mist or just simply fog, but since Saturday night it was actually raining. I called my friend Ng today to speak Mandarin today and to see how ell my Chinese is. The good thing about speaking Mandarin to a non-teacher is that their ear is not used to hearing the layman Chinese speaker speak. My Chinese was okay except for the tones on certain words, a concept which is dificult at first for non-Chinese speakers. At least he could understand most of what I was saying. When he would speak to me in Chinese, though, I could understand most of what he was saying except for the vocab I did not learn yet. Zai jian! |

Yesterday I attended the Navy Day Ball. To start off, my date bitched about the parking I was initially going to park at because it was too far of a walk. She said something about being in high-heels, but I wasn't paying attention. Maybe I'm not sensitive. I quickly forgot about it, because I had to do a quick practice for honor guard, because we were presenting the National Colors as soon as the ball began. My date also was angered by the fact that I went and danced with other ladies that evening. Maybe it was for the fact that she wouldn't dance. She then danced with another guy to make me jealous, but I don't think I am capable of that emotion anymore. I thought it was pretty funny. I did have a blast, though. The highlight of my evening was to dance with some of the females in my higher chain of command. I especially enjoyed my swing dance round with CTI2 Williams who is my Honor Guard lead petty officer who I like to call Petty Officer Hotty McHotness. Then to top off the evening I dropped my date off at her house and then went back to an after-party and spent the remainder of the evening with a very charming girl. The End. |

It's been a while. With Chinese, Jujutsu, theater, honor guard, women and various volunteer events, I've been very busy lately. I was on television for the 49ers game if anybody saw it. My first test day is this Friday. Eight hours filled with chinese. I'll try to update soon. |

I went to Las Vegas last weekend to attend Defcon 12, a computer security conference. As it turns out, a few of my shipmates (a term for a fellow sailor) had also planned to go that weekend as well. We had a caravan of 3 vehicles. A friend of mine, Greg, rode with me and it delighted me that I did not have to drive the eight hours there alone. My new car worked as it was supposed to and that also made me happy because it was the most expensive thing that I have purchased which was only possible because of credit. I am now $13,000 dollars in debt and it should be that way for the next 5 years barring I do not purchase a house in that time or I get a platinum credit card.
I learned quite a bit at the conference and met up with some friends from Dallas and New York City and even some people of whom I had met at the previous Defcon I had attended two years prior. It is always good to see familiar faces and I feel doubly blessed when they return the enthusiasm.
I have began researching Buddhism and Confucius to learn more of the Chinese culture, because the next two years of my life are going to be dedicated to learning its language. Two other books I have just completed are Communion by Whitley Streiber and Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. The former frightened me as much as the movie did when I watched it 11 years ago and the latter had me laughing all the way through. I recommend Lamb to any reader who has an interest in Christianity, but not the bullheadedness to be offended by the content.

I've been in Monterey for a week now and I've had a fairly fun time so far. I've made several friends already and I'm making more every day. I'm trying to find an apartment and I need to get to a car dealership sometime soon so I can get my car. Everything here seems great except that I am thoroughly convinced Kelly hates me. I think that going to Groton first was a Godsend, because there are some people here who have a year longer in the Navy than I do and I out-rank them. They aren't able to make petty officer until they finish school. I don't have any way to check my email right now, but I'm working on it. I'll try to update sometime soon again. |

I got out of work half an hour early on Thursday. I used this extra time to pack a bag and I then returned to the office in which my Chief was still there wrapping things up for the end of the business day. He took me to New London for me to catch a train train to Baltimore. I thank my luck for allowing me to board an earlier train because I got there just in time before its departure. During the 6 hour ride I had a wonderful conversation with a school teacher from Boston named Caitlin. We parted ways in Delaware at which time I called Dane and let him know I would be arriving at the BWI Train Depot shortly. After my egress from the boarding area, I easily spotted Dane wearing his usual bright-yellow shirt. We ate and then went back to his hotel room. His roommate was gone for the weekend; he spontaneously flew to California at the behest of his girlfriend. A romantic gesture; one that I would gladly do if I had one whom I loved that desired my presence so greatly. Dane and I spent the remainder of the evening chatting. That night I awoke in the middle of my sleep cycle with a bout of sleep paralysis, a very scary phenomena if you are not familiar with. Thank you Kelly for giving this problem a name for me.
The next day, Dane and I watched The Chronicles of Riddick. It was remeniscant of a futuristic and less funny version of the Scorpion King; a lone man, the last of his people is the defender for humanity. The end also reminded me much of the Nintendo 64 game Conker's Bad Fur Day. This movie filled two genres that thoroughly enjoy: Sci-fi and Action. It's not enough, however to carry the franchise, but I guess we'll see with the release of The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury and any other future plans. Diesel does play a perfect part that could not be done by many others; he makes not hard to want to hate the hero and then feel bad for hating him. He did not seem so evil and heartless in this movie as he did the last, because his penchant for women and children shined, but I guess traveling the galaxy for a few years one may grow more fond of others. Overall on a scale of -2 to 2, I give this movie a 1.
After the movie, Dane and I walked around the mall and then explored Baltimore. I wanted to go saunter around downtown, but did not because of the rain. Saturday Dane and I actually had a chance to walk around the downtown. The peir area was beautiful and made me want to not believe that Baltimore got an F rating for smog, but then again all of it had fallen to the ground the previous day in the form of acid rain. While driving back to the hotel, Dane informed me that I missed our exit, but I knew this and had just not told him of my plans to go to D.C. The parts of D.C. we saw were regal and pristine. The Lincoln and new World War II memorials with the shallow pond stretched between were seated in the shadow of the Washington monument. Breathtaking.
Sunday morning we said our good-byes. Cait emailed me saying I should go up to Boston before I leave to Monterey. It's a pity I won't have time. I'm going to miss Dane. |

Happy Birthday Kelly! In other news.. I have none. Less than a month until I go to Monterey. I'm trying to buy a new car. I'm planning to take a week of leave at the end of this month to visit family in Missouri. I want to make a trip to Baltimore within the month to visit Mr. Dane Primrose while he is in the states. For anybody who wants my new address it's:
ET3 Hornsby, Kaleb Z. 485 A Caffrey Ct. Monterey, CA 93944
My email is still the same. My AIM name is still the same. My phone number is still the same, but may change soon. I still have two nipples, two eyes, 11 toes, 32 teeth. I still hate Connecticut and pickled beets, but loooove deviled eggs and freshly baked calzones. |

This is how an email conversation went at work today. I thought it was hillarious:
I wrote this email to my entire code to inform them I have made a new contact list with updated information since our old one was, well... old.
<To: NAVSUBSCOL N5 PERSONNEL> <FROM: ET3 KALEB Z. HORNSBY> <SUBJECT: N5 CONTACT LIST>
To whom it may concern:
There is a contact list of all code LCPOs and LPOs located in "S:\NWLN\NAVSUBSCOL\N5\Misc\N5 Contacts". If there is any error or discrepancy, please let me know.
-Hornsby
I then got this reply a little while later informing me that I was on the urinalysis list which I already knew:
<To: ET3 KALEB Z. HORNSBY> <FROM: ET1 JOHNSON> <SUBJECT: Re: N5 CONTACT LIST> Go pee.
I then replied with:
Do you want to help? On second thought I already did it just fine all by myself.
-Hornsby
And then got an imediate reply of:
No, I don't want to help. Besides, I'm afraid of needles.
So I retorted with:
As much as it hurts, I feel as if I must commend you on your quick and witty reply, no matter how untrue it is.
-Hornsby
In which the conversation was finalized with him saying:
It's one of those things you will be blessed with once you get dolphins on your chest and sea time under your belt. Ooh Yah, Go Navy!
I will never get Dolphins, because I am now going to crypto-linguist school on not on subs, but I felt the conversation should end there.

1. Go into your LJ's archives. 2. Find your 23rd post (or closest to). 3. Find the fifth sentence (or closest to). 4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
Some fancy scientists and dictionary-writers like to call this hand-eye coordination.
On another note, this is the last day for me to wear my working blues.
With the weather getting warmer, my sweat glands are greatly going to appreciate the cooler white uniforms. And I know what most of you are thinking: "That's not blue, that's black!" Well guess what! You're right. |
